Painting - How do you use a loop roller?

A friend needs to hide small imperfections on his ceiling and wants to use a loop roller. Can the loop roller be used with joint compound to add texture to the ceiling? How is this done?
Can he use the loop roller to apply textured paint to the ceiling? If so, how is this done?
