Nail penetration
A couple of days ago there was some discussion here about nailing schedules, nail sizes and nail penetration. As a DIYer I have always followed building code nailing schedules, probably because I had nothing else to go on. However, I never thought much about requirements for nail penetration.
Looking around I found a couple of sources that say nail penetration should be 11X the nail diameter (somewhere around 1 1/2" for 16d) but I couldn't tell if that was penetration into both members being fastened or only into the end piece. Is the 11X a code requirement and can anyone define the term "nail penetration" more clearly?

Re: Nail penetration
What if you are using a 2 1/2" finish nail? The penetration would only need to be 11x a 15 gauge nail? If there is such a penetration code, then someone has too much time on their hands, and not enough time in the field. Penetration should be about 1/2 to 2/3 into the structure onto which you are attaching an object. So if you are nailing a 2x4 to something, then 1 1/2" or so should be into the "something" if you are using a 3" framing nail. Common sense will take over where such codes lack definition.
