Load bearing wall
Had an architect draw up plans including removal of wall between lv and dn room. Size of beam in plans. I'm considering doing this myself. The beam in the bsmt (under the wall I plan to remove) is steel I-beam. I'm planning approx 18 ft opening. I would like to "hide the beam" If I put up temp supports on both sides of the wall, and remove wall and plate-then cut joists to accommodate the beam is it reasonable to support joists to beam with simple joist hangers and a strap of some sort to tie the cut joists together? Also, would 2 2x4 trimmers at each end of the beam support the beam properly?

That is a very big question. It matters more what is above the wall you intend to remove than what is in the basement. What size and type of joists are in the ceiling?
As for your questions, the answer is yes, you can hide the beam with joist hangers but the specifics depend on what you have in your particular case. I doubt 2 2x4 trimmers will be sufficient.
