I have a family room that was added on to the house 1960 or so. It's a flat rock roof and it seems to be poorly insulated. Too hot in summer and too cool in the winter.
Are there some good products for re roofing this to improve our comfort in the room? Hopefully technology has made some improvements in this area!!
I assume that the original roof would be totally removed and a new one placed. Can that be done by any roofer or do I need to hire a general contractor?

The ceiling is tongue and groove/beamed. I want to keep the beams exposed. That's why I figure that I have to make improvements from the outside.

Well, you can insulate the top, but you would have to remove the existing roofing to do it.

Tear it off and you could set roof insulation in a foam adhesive in order to not penetrate the ceiling with fasteners, and then have another BUR installed with gravel ballast.

I suggest the foam because it will be less likely to run into the house than hot asphalt. Any idea how thick the T&G roof deck is?
